Deer Lottery - Results available

I remember the good old days when you found out if you were successful in the deer lottery before the 4th of July.   Any guesses on when we will find out results this year?   I'm guessing August 4th.

I'm gonna guess it will be late August, like the 21st.

July 25th

Wish it would get back to before the 4th. They need to move up the app deadline if they are going to continue to drag out the lottery. Make apps due by May 1st they have all the data season info ready by then anyway. People want to plan vacation time!

Agreed, the last 3 years I have stockpiled vacation time for November and skipped other outings just to sit on my vacation time only to not draw a tag. Frustrating.

July 31st is my guess. Ya I think they could move a bit quicker on the lottos. They may even get more customers that way.

The reason they say you need a lot of patience for hunting is not for the long sits, it's for waiting on the State to decide whether or not to give you permision.

Why would they need more customers for when they are already short on buck tags to the tune of 4 to 1? As for the dates I will go with the 24th early with the tease of in progress starting late the week before since we all know it takes days for a computer to pick random numbers!

I don't get how now that it's all online it somehow takes them longer to draw.  They don't have anymore of the typing in applications.

Now their excuse is they are checking all the gratis apps since they are do at the same time. That's BS too because most of those are the same people and the same property every year and it should be in the system by now.

Well it still won't make the season come any earlier, and I know lots of guys that get gratis tags who shouldn't, so as far as I'm concerned they can check as many as they can. The more gratis that get denied mean more tags available to the rest of us.

Curious as to why you say there are a lot of guys that get gratis , who shouldn't?

Maybe a lot is a bit of an overstatement, but I know of several instances where someone owns 1 quarter of land, and 4 people in their family all get gratis for that quarter, so obviously not all gratis apps are checked by g and f. Also there are people with gratis that hunt the unit like they had a regular tag, then brag about how they got away with it. I'm not against gratis tags, if you own the land you should be able to shoot one off it, but the people who don't abide by the rules and get away with it pisses me off.

Yes what you said is not right of those people.  It will catch up with them sometime.   I have a gratis, and my applicaiton has been audited a few times.  So not all gratis applicants are the enemy.   I'm pretty sure those all on 1 quarter of land will be caught soon doing that if they haven't been already.  Why not put a tip in on these people you know are not following the rules of their gratis tag?

Gratis tags are fine but they should never be allowed to take 100% of all tags in any given unit.

Looks like 2 units last year had no doe tags available after gratis, 2D and 3A1.https://gf.nd.gov/licensing/availability/deer/stats

Wow, looks like you're right, I had no idea this was happening anywhere.  I agree, some sort of an overhaul is needed, but it seems like a fine line.  Either you're going to piss off landowning hunters or you're going to piss off hunters who are unable to apply for gratis.  The most fair way to do it would probably be to put gratis applicants in their own separate lottery when deer numbers or available licenses in their respective units reach a certain low threshold, or when that threshold is met eliminate gratis tags for that year entirely and put all applicants in the general lottery.

Of course, my opinions are from the point of view of a non-landowning hunter, so they may be skewed. I can certainly see where landowners would fee slighted if they had to wait for lottery results for a gratis tag, or have gratis tags eliminated entirely for a year or two.

IMO the gratis system has kind of gotten away from what it was intended as which was a good gesture to landowners who actually make their living off their property for putting up with the deer and allowing hunters on their land. Now it's become an easy way for people to get a guaranteed tag every year.

I think they should increase the acreage requirement to 640 acres. I don't know any actual farmer or rancher making a living off their land that doesn't have at least 640 acres now days. That would eliminate some of these people who have a quarter that they don't actually make their living off of but just to get a guaranteed tag every year.

Keep in mind that the guy who owns 160 acres and gets a gratis tag can only hunt those 160 acres. That doesn't seem unreasonable at all.  I think it should remion the way it is, but certainly they could speed it up by fast-tracking gratis apps that were checked last year.  I think it's more of a process failure.

I'll admit, I'm not very familiar with gratis requirements, etc.  What happens when a guy who owns thousands of acres breaks it up and puts his moms name on a piece, his dads on a separate, his kids on 2 or 3 different pieces?

Did 1 guaranteed gratis tag just turn into 5 or 6? Educate me.

When you say "Puts his moms name on a piece, his dads on a separate, his kids on 2 or 3 different pieces", I think there has to be an actual transfer of ownership. Who's going to do that just to get a deer license?  I could be wrong, but this would be an excellent topic to have a G&F representative give precise details and publish in this string.  Perhaps Davis could get them to respond and give definitive answers.

2E two years ago had no tags left and I believe that includes does as well. There were a total of five units that year I believe that had at least one side buck or does completely gone after gratis and that should never happen. I would definitely be all for changing it to a full section instead of a quarter section or just switching it to an 80/20 maximum.

You want to see real screwed up go out to the Badlands and look at the elk tags because if you have a quarter section out there you get to hunt all the land every year! My dad and I seriously looked into picking up a section back in the early 2000s just so he can get an elk tag every year plus the land was cheap as hell back then.

I understood it as inorder to get a gratis you had to own or actively farm 160 acres. So if you rented a quarter and the land owner didn't apply for the gratis you could use those legals. Yes I know of instances where the guy, wife and kids all got gratis tags on different quarters of land. Land was all under the guys name
