I have the LX7 and love it, this after learning how to set it up with the target adjust and sensitivity.  I do like being able to go from a flasher to graph or having flasher, graph and zoom all on one screen.  The only other flasher I have ever used is an LX5 so I can't say much about other companies.

Good luck

after using the elite 5 this year i can never ever think of going flasher again.  amazing how the way points from this summer are good in the winter to.

I much prefer my handheld gps. I don't like the idea of having a big computer out icefishing. Its only my opinion but it is what it is

not the case with my elite is is smaller and wieghs less than the marcum my wife now uses.  It is nice with the navionics chip to have a very good idea where the drops are and saves drilling a bunch of prospecting holes

yeah my handheld gps with lakemaster chip tells me that. I was just saying I prefer my handheld gps to a big screen like in a boat for icefishing.

Well my flasher went down with a sinking ship last year and took on too much water.  Can't get her to fire up.

So I'm looking to cheat on my love for Vexilar.  Fished with a 'bird last weekend and I didn't mind it.  I really like having a digital readout of depth.  Just faster when checking depths.

That said, I'm eying the Marcum 6 or 7.  I really like how Marcum has an 8 degree cone and has allowed me an excuse to cheat on Vexilar.  The cone is absolutely important for me.  Hence, none of the Lowrance products will work for me unless they have tigher cones now.

So anyone running that Marcum 6 or 7?  Any thoughts on other products?

I know this has been hashed over and over and the tried and true Vexilar is a top notch unit but I'm looking to explore a bit this time.  I'll have a Vexilar 18 as a backup or an extra for guests.  But for now, lookng for 2012-2013 opinions on the new gadgets out today.

Tried to look in local sporting goods store but they didn't have a single one in stock in the beginning of January.  Unbelieveable.  Forced to buy online.

why a tighter cone? I assume one would want the widest cone available? or am I missing something?

Well of course our local sporting goods store was out.  You act as if there are lots of people that hunt and fish in north dakota.  You should be shopping for something they would readily stock and have a large selection of, like snowboarding gear and apparel, you know, the more common and popular of the outdoor activities here on the plains. (sarcasm)

It blows me away that the minot scheels (assuming thats where you went) has a better selection of snowboards and gear than fishing equipment.  The nearest mountain is a thousand miles away.

a counter map has become just as or more vital than a flasher for me. Its essential on Devils Lake.

Yeah, wide cones are terrible for me anyway. Even with the very smoothest of bottoms they can "rob you" of the bottom 6 inches to a foot.

You can recognize when they are screwing you by taking your lure to the "bottom" on your machine, then being able to drop your lure an aditional few inches to a few feet further down, depending on cone/bottom combo.

I rarely move off the "narrow" setting on my dual cone FL-18.

Oh, I thought they were always 9 degree.  I bought a stand-alone 9 I think for my older flasher.

Yep.  Just this past weekend I was fishing on a cut from 18 to 30 feet spanned less than 15 feet.  If I had a wider cone I would have dead zones.  Plus, some larger sandstone rocks below as well.

The only time I use a GPS is when I am driving up to a spot or drilling holes.  I carry my GPS with me as I'm drilling holes.  Nice to just slip the handheld in the pocket and punch a few holes and then check again to see where I moved on the structure.  Easier than setting down the flasher/sonar unit.

The M-6 is on the way.  Made the Bismarck UPS.

If I don't like it as much as others I will just sell her and get a different one.

Wow! You didnt kick the tires as much as i thought you would!! lol had to give you a little grief!

You will be happy, make sure to read through the destructions as theres many settings and such, all about personal preference - thats what makes it a great unit.

Well that kind of worries me as simple is good with ice fishing but I need to satisfy my curiosity.  Would still be a Vex purchase but I really am lazy and like digital readout on depth when finishing up drilling initial structure holes and want to fine tune depth.

Might be different if I had LIDAR generated contours and surveyed lake contours for the non LIDAR chunks on Oahe!  Just down right spoiled with that technology!

But seriously though, I usually am going to set up on a chunk of structure for either the morning or the evening.  I like to get their early enough to punch the appropriate amount of holes so I don't spook them when the bite is prime-time.  I normally jump around every 5 to 10 minutes during the prime-time so I don't want to have to drill a hole every 5 to 10 minutes.  Easier to just punch it open with the muck boot.

On a serious number, you are running a M-6 though?

No, just sticking with my trusty fl-18 I bought 11 years ago.  Upgraded to a tri-beam ducer last year when my original started getting a little weak.  I was thinking to myself the other day: I wonder how many times that thing has rotated over the last decade?

I do get sick and tired of my FL-18 spinning noise though. It's cool when you first hit the ice - after 6 hours it gets old.

Once you get the settings where you like them (i really like the idea of personalization) - there is no more fiddling around, just turn on and go for the most part.

I also like the narrow cone in the house so I don't pick up multiple lines when I have holes close together.

Tim, I bought an LX7 last Feb. That thing was awesome to fish with!! Likes, digital screen, multiple settings, no noise, instant readout, the graph setting, battery life. Dislikes, the screen can get hard to see on a bright sunny day, the screen protector gets dirty easily...I was to chicken to fish w/o it. Depending on the person you will hate/like the downloadable updates to it. It was easy, free, and I like that they are constantly addressing issues if people are having them. I never had any though. There are currently no updates for the 6 and 9 though. I was curious and just weighed mine....11 lbs 4 oz. Didn't realize it was that heavy!! Could be a dislike for people but I never noticed it "being heavy" while fishing.

Aside from the first few minutes, I don't notice it.  That and listening to the radio.  If mine gets noisy, I just kick it a little and it quiets down.  It's kinda like owning a pet j/k.
