Fire line makes a pretty good saw!

A bit off season topic for ND but was striped bass fishing yesterday, had a good one on when it sounded and felt like it tangled in a rock or stump.  Wouldn’t budge.  Backed the boat up, the usual round and round dance but nothing gave so finally threw caution to the winds, put on gloves and grabbed the line and pulled like heck to break it  off.  I use 30 pound power pro, having learned that standard wallet line is no match for some of these big guys and have cut my hands breaking it off snags before, therefore the gloves.

I gave a backbreaking pull and it broke, away, then when I started reeling in there was something big and heavy on the line.  Up to the boat I found a fence post sized log cut right off  by the power pro and almost cut through in a second place.  Amazingly the 5-6 pound Striper was still solidly hooked!   Ate him last nite.

Luck was with me, as those old tree stumps though water soaked for 80 years and are pretty soft but are coated with zebra and quagga mussels and are very sharp and usually snip the line like a knife.  This time though, the power pro was bulletproof!  Reminded me of one of those wire survival saw things.

Nope, won’t mount the fish or the log, or eat the log either!

Any time I have a button come off I use fireline to sew it back on. The fabric on the clothing will tear before the fireline breaks off.

Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

Great idea! I have a button to sew back on to a pair of fishing shorts right now.  Maybe it’ll hold up my ever expanding belly better than that weak cotton thread! LOL

Fireline, power pro, mono; they all cut me to the bone when I ain't paying attention.  I swear, the first and second knuckles of the index finger on both of my hands is almost all scar tissue nowadays from fishing line.

Guess I'll just never learn.
