Fishing for Trout

A few buddies and I are planning a camping trip in July on the Missouri river by Washburn.  We would like to try and catch some trout around that area.  We are looking for any advise, tips, or suggestions to catch trout in that area or if they are even in the area.  Also would like to try and get into some catfish at night off shore, any suggestions on good bait for catfish in that area would be greatly appreciated.

Nightcrawlers--good for all Missouri River fish--trout,walleye, pike, catfish, etc.  For cats, also try chicken livers, fresh shrimp, Spam chunks.

Cats are easy just catch a crap fish like a carp or goldeneye then cut it into chunks and drop it in just up stream of a dead tree in the water and prepare to fill your truck bed with cats. Channel cats in the Missouri are the Special Olympics of fishing in North Dakota because anyone can hammer them. As for trout you can try the tail race for them but it's normally only one or two and often none but if you get one they tend to be big. Otherwise lighting up by turtle lake or Harmon down by mandan. If you truly want to get into trout you would be best off just heading for fish creek west of mandan but that's a bit of a haul from wasburn.

Nearest trout lakes to Washburn  I can think of is that little lake a mile or so east of Turtle Lake.  A few years ago it was being managed as a trophy trout lake and there was some big trout in there and was a great place to fly fish! Can't remember it's name....haven't been there for a few years.

Fish Creek is always good for trout, but is a bit of a drive from Washburn.  But lots of fish.

That little lake in the WMA, the old coal mines east of Garrison used to be well stocked with trout, but again, I can't recall its name and don't know the current trout situation.    SUrprisingly, that little city park lake just north of the gas station in WILTON used to be stocked with trout, lots of them.  Don't know the situation there either.  And the tail race often gives up BIG trout, usually caught fishing for walleye, etc.

I think you've got a lot better chance of catching trout at Stanton than Washburn.  I've caught trout in both places, but the higher reaches of the river get better.
