Little sister trying to get her first turkey

Hi, my little sister is 12 years old and the turkey flock we always use to hunt has slimmed down to almost none. I am struggling finding a place and turkeys for her to hunt and get that amazing feeling of knocking down your first Tom! Could any one possibly help out?

Hunter, where is unit 19?  A general location.  Our unit, SW of Mandan is way way down the last few years.  I’d love to help you out but after looking for days and seeing almost none out there, only one small flock that has since disappeared, I’d hate to waste your time.  Only two gobblers taken in the whole área that I know of.  Used to see hundreds in that area in spring and fall, now only the rare occasional flock.

Yeah the same problem here. The flocks of 30-40 are down to 5-7 and the unit is west in the Glen Ullin new salem area and then goes south to the Elgin area I believe.

We are the next unit east of unit 19.  But same situation here. Turkeys way down.  I’ve been rattling around the area I hunt, usually plenty of turkeys, and the entire spring have only seen one small flock and one or two singles, none in the past 10 days.

I’m curious what is happening to them?  Can’t be bad winters as if anything our winters in the past 10 years have been maybe better than before that..  disease.  I haven’t seen or heard of a sick turkey since we killed one with avian tuberculosis exactly 30 years ago.

I did hear rumors of depredation killings of 200-300 a couple of years ago in that unit by a rancher apparently with G & F approval, thoughhavent been able to document that.  Pretty good sources though, and this might be ongoing and other ranchers following on the QT.  Turkeys can be destructive and are far down the list of important species to manage by the G&F. Still, I’d think there would be better ways to manage overpopulation and depredation problems than mass shooting and dump the bodies in a hole.  But like I say, these are only unsubstantiated rumors, though from pretty good sources.
