McDowell Dam | 6/14/17

tried some topwater lure action at McDowell last week one evening...bluegills couldn't keep themselves away from my bass lure, but none got hooked. My buddy and i each caught 3 small largemouth, from 6-10 inches long. weed beds along shore make it very high maintenance fishing at best. Poppers on a fly rod with waders would be good to try for bluegills, but haven't done it yet.

largemouth bass

Caught about a 2 lb 17 inch bass today on a Texas rigged yum blue and Black worm... caught him on the fall when the bait hit the water... unfortunately that was the only one I caught just haven't figured out where they are or what exact to use. Any help or information or tips I could get would help.

So what seems to be the best approach to catching bass on McDowell?  I have been out there twice now this spring and only managed a couple small blue gills.  Seeing all kinds of nice bass but cant get them to take any interest in what I am putting in front of them.  I was out there today and seen one that was at least 4lbs and many others 2-3 lbs.  Seems like there are some nice fish in there but just cant get them to bit.  Also worth noting I fish from shore.

Well fudge, went to McDowell on Saturday to try and spend a couple hours chasing some gills around.  Didn't have a good day, the damn wind was blowing to beat the band out of the north and I had a complete battery failure on one of my trolling motor batteries.  Note to all, a 24V system doesn't work worth a hoot when run off a single 12V battery.  Grrrr....

Not really a report but more of a heads up for those that aren't aware. This lake has a healthy largemouth bass population for those of you that enjoy chasing these green fish. I hit this lake for the first time last summer and was impressed. You can literally catch 50 bass in a day and many of them will be 3 pounds or better. In only 2 trips to the lake, I caught 5 bass over 4 pounds, including one that weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces! I know we don't have much of a bass following in ND but this is great place to go for a change of pace. Plus, it's just on the outskirts of Bismark.

There are finally some nice bluegill and bass to catch at McDowell.  The lake is real nice right now.  Can see a lot of fish swimming around.  Catch the fish with small worms and bobber or fly rod.  I just fished around the docks and swimming area.  No doubt would do well if I had used a boat to get to some other spots.  I caught several real nice bluegill and a number of smaller ones.  Saw a few nice bass being caught.   All that I caught weren't too big.

Myself, my buddy, my fiance and our little girl were the ones next to you on the dock later on that evening flycaster.  We ended up catching 7 bluegill on hook and corn from the dock and several bites.  The fishing got worse the closer to dusk it got.  Was a fun time for the little one and a good way to spend a weekday evening.

I fished McDowell on Tuesday, July 21 with the family.  We fished from the dock near the boat rental.  Lots of bluegill biting but most were too small to keep.  I saw quite a few bluegill sitting on nests near shore that looked to be good size.  Had I gone there by myself with a floattube, no doubt a person could catch a number of good sized bluegill.  We used earthworms dug from the garden.  Those that were fishing with nightcrawler caught just about nothing, even though they were cutting them in quarters.  Kids had a lot of fun.
