Took my son out over the Labor Day weekend and we hauled in 3 nice cats. They were somewhere between 25 and 30 inchies. If I had to guess the largest of the fish was about 10 Lbs. Also caught half a dozen smaller cats. Caught all of them on chicken liver sprinkled with garlic to add a little more stink. We release the three bigger cats, so hopefully someone else can enjoy caughting them as well.
Red River (North)
Formed by the confluence of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers in the United States, it flows northward through the Red River Valley and forms the border between the U.S. states of Minnesota and North Dakota before continuing into Manitoba, Canada. At
tokk my mom to turlte river today, water is lower but still murky, using crawlers we got a bullhead, a goldeye, 2 creek chubs, and 2 crawfish. a flyfisherman was there but he didn't catch anything. should've waited until the heat and humidity was less oppresive.
ah turtle river you spoil thee with your plenty. kept 3 cats (2 23 inchers and a 24), had 3 more on the line (what seemed to be a couple more 23 inchers and a 28 incher, would have let that one go anyway) but they broke off right at the hook just as I was about to grab them (no net, big mistake), also 3 goldeye and a bullhead, all came on crawlers on slip sinker rigs about 50 yards down from the ccc dam, 2 of the goldeye struck the bait as I was reeling in and both swallowed it as only goldeye can do. one of the cats when cleaned had a 7 inch sucker in it.
Fun day on the river. Caught a 3lb Cat (tasty!), 2 smaller cats (1 channel one bullhead), and three goldeye (in freezer for bait). Catfish was caught on dough bait, while the other fish on crawlers. No action whatsoever with chicken livers.
The red is way up from the last time I was out and current is way way up, like a normal spring at this time. No way to fish the main river and like always, tributaries are holding lots of fish. Any little out pocket without current can be a gold mine too (who knew their are good sized bluegills?). Finally found the walleyes lindy rigging from shore and they're post spawn skinny but incredibly aggressive and fun to catch.
The bigger catfish are finally biting and it's fast and furious at sunset. The goldeye nail minnows then cut up the goldeye for tons of the 5lb+ range cats. I found that I needed smaller pieces of cut bait than I normally use in mid summer, and to make sure that they really take the bait before trying to set the hook.
Fishing is getting better as it warms. Goldeye are ravenous and even the pike are joining in on twister tails. Still no walleye or catfish for me on the red this year yet, but came home with ticks. No mosquitoes yet, so I won't be complaining.
went out from 6-9:30. Fishing was pretty slow. caught abunch of little cats. i was kinda hoping for a fat jucy goldeye for some cut bait, but that never happened...on the bright side i managed to catch 3 walleyes on crawlers right on the bottom. A 9 inch and two 11 inchers. the eyes started biting around 9. They were a real light bite, so you gotta let em take it in before you set the hook. all in all, a pretty fun night. BTW, water is still low and slow
Went out on Saturday with my dad. I have been after walleye and perch for the last couple years, but went back to how we started fishing, for cats. Went to the first spot and the we're probably 6 or more cars there shore fishing. Went to the Seco d and the water was so low couldn't launch the jon boat. End up farther norther and found a spot to drop it it. Wefinally had line wet at about 530. Didn't take long and we wereally getting hits. Figured out the pattern And we were landing 12 in cats left and right.
