Sounds like there are people catching some decent Walleye out on Island lake East of Jamestown right now. Second hand report, of course.
The Walleye (Sander vitreus vitreus, formerly Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) is a freshwater perciform fish native to most of Canada and to the northern United States. It is a North American close relative of the European pikeperch. The walleye is sometimes also called the yellow walleye to distinguish it from the extinct blue walleye.
Well I've been to Devils Lake twice this year and spent six days on the water and change. I've watched about 150 boats at the cleaning stations and have decided that the great fishing they promote and what occurs are not the same. Nearly all boats are catching small fish and keeping 12 - 16 inchers -calling that a limit of good fish. This is the third year I've observed this.
Went out on the reservoir tonight, it was crap. Caught probably 15 bullheads pulling spinners and leeches in 16 feet of water. Managed 2 small crappies somehow, and nothing else.
I DID shoot a carp with the bow off of the boat, so that was fun. Otherwise it was pretty much a bust.
Missouri River fishing near Bismarck has been good but variable the last week or two, been seeing a lot of walleyes in the 12" to 16" size. Have manged to bring home 6-8 eaters several times with 2 hours of fishing mixed in with a 4 hour pleasure cruies on the pontoon. Other boats seem to be mostly jigging and we see them catching some fish, but we have been getting a lot more on crank baits in 5' to 10' of water using #4 shad/glas rap or #4 salmo hornet. Lots of junk in the water so a split shot helps keep the lure clean.
Fished Mikes Lake, Chain Lake, etc. Northwest of Devils Lake this weekend, walleye fishing was relatively slow. We found some luck pulling cranks in 6-9 feet of water, lots of small pike.
Fished 5-18 and got 6, kept 5. Fished noon til dark and most fish came the last half hour I was fishing. Fished this morning as well and had my limit in less than an hour, Kept fishing just for fun and picked up three more I released. I missed a lot of fish both trips. Water is high and stained right now and has been staying right under 50 degrees. Been getting nothing to go on minnows or crawlers, tried tossing cranks and twisters as well with no luck. All fish came on swimbaits. Bigggest one was 25 in at 4.5 lbs.
FISHED NORTH OF MISTY WATERS FISHING WAS VERY GOOD HAD A 3 MAN LIMIT WITH THE MAJORITY OF FISH 17-20" AND ACOUPLE 23-25" WE RELEASED LOTS OF SMALLER ONE MIXED IN ALSO HOPE IT STAYS HOT
Fished both 4-21 and 4-22 north of Graners boat ramp fishing was spotty friday was able to get a 1 person limit 2 guys in the boat, The two of us were able to get 8 on saturday. Spent anywhere fro 4 to 6 hours each day. The bite was hard compared to last year we could limit out within hours. Between cooler water and more water it taking some time, water temp still arouund 41 three weeks ago it was 38.
Fished both Fort Rice and Graner. Really slow between F R boat ramp and Hazelton Boat ramps, Load up Move to Graner lots of small walleyes action was steady lots of boats but didn;t see any monsters don't think anything over 20" was caught while we were there. Went home fishless all fish we caught were 12"13 "
